Calhoun Community College Celebrates 60th Anniversary
Calhoun Community College will celebrate its 60th anniversary this year with several events scheduled throughout the year. On Thursday, September 27, 2007, the College will feature American Idol winner Ruben Studdard in concert. The outdoor event will begin at 7:00 pm on the lawn in front of Calhoun's Health Sciences Center, located on the northern end of the Decatur campus. Nicknamed the "Velvet Teddy Bear", the Birmingham native was voted the 2003 American Idol. Studdard received a Grammy Award nomination for his R&B single, "Superstar" and was awarded the NAACP's Best New Artist award in 2004.
Opening acts for the 60th Anniversary concert include local entertainers Dorothy Cole as Tina Turner, Ahead of the Wake, Monkee and the Spank Daddys, and The Alabama Blues Brothers. Advance tickets are $10 for students with valid ID; $15 general admission and $20 day of the event. Tickets may be purchased at the following locations:

Concert attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. A number of food vendors will be available.
Another event scheduled for the 60th anniversary celebration will take place on Friday, October 5, 2007, when the college will dedicate its Health Sciences Center during an official ceremony beginning at 11:00 am on the Decatur campus. Alabama Department of Postsecondary Chancellor Bradley Byrne will participate in this event, which will include tours of the building provided by students enrolled in Calhoun's health programs.
The year-long celebration will culminate next March with a black-tie Gala sponsored by the Calhoun Foundation. The event is planned for March 1, 2008, and will be held on the Decatur campus. During the event, a major announcement will be made regarding the Foundation's Capital Campaign, which is currently underway. The three-year long campaign is now moving into its second year, with a goal of $3 million to fund scholarships; math, science and health programs; and campus improvements.
