BP Amoco Awards $33,900 Grant to Calhoun

BP Amoco recently awarded a $33,900 grant to Calhoun Community College as the primary sponsor of the college's Center for Manufacturing Innovation (CMI) 2007 "Career in Gear" summer camp for middle and high school teachers and counselors. The camp started last year and was funded in part through a U.S. Department of Labor grant awarded to Calhoun for the formation of the CMI project. The purpose of the week-long camp was to provide information to teachers and counselors about the career opportunities in technical fields. Through presentations, hands-on training and demonstrations, and visits to area industry, the teachers and counselors learned how to better advise their students in the career/technical fields as well as information on industry needs, and what is offered through Calhoun's credit and non-credit technical training programs. This year's camp was held in June; 38 teachers and counselors from area schools participated.

According to Dr. Mary Yarbrough, dean for technologies and workforce education at Calhoun, BP Amoco expressed an interest in providing funding for this year's camp "because the company realizes the value of informing students now on the high-paying career opportunities available in the technologies and how they need to prepare for these jobs." "BP wanted to ensure this summer teacher and counselor technology camp continues and has pledged its support of the program," Yarbrough added.
