Calhoun Community College Receives Grant
to Establish Industry Training Site
Calhoun Community College’s Adult Education Program has been awarded a $40,000 grant from the state of Alabama to establish a Focused Industry Training (FIT) site at the college. According to Chris Miller, director of Calhoun’s Adult Education program, the Focused Industry Training program is designed to provide career pathways for adults with limited education and employment experience. Participants in the program may be unemployed or underemployed with the desire to seek better employment opportunities or promotions with companies. “We are extremely pleased to receive this award and excited at the opportunities it will provide for our students,” commented Miller.
The FIT program provides a simulated workplace environment giving trainees the entry level skills required for employment with businesses and industries throughout the state. The program offers training based on the standards cited by business and industry employers in Alabama and the skills cited in the U.S. Department of Labor Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) Reports. “Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be awarded the Alabama Certified Worker Certificate.
The Focused Industry Training Program is operated through Alabama’s Adult Education Program in cooperation with the Alabama Industrial Development Training Institute (AIDT). Clients admitted to the program must be at least 16 years of age, must not be enrolled in high school, and must function at or below the 12.9 level on the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE).
