Calhoun's Posada and Frickie Elected to Hall of Fame

The Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) Commissioner’s Office has announced the Alabama Community College Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2006.  This year’s class includes current New York Yankees catcher and former Calhoun Community College student, Jorge Posada and retired Calhoun baseball coach, Fred Frickie.  The induction ceremony will be held January 19, 2007, at the Retirement Systems of Alabama Center for Commerce in Montgomery, AL.

Jorge Posada, chosen as the athlete inducted into the 2006 class, graduated from Calhoun Community College after being named best hitter in 1990, being named co-captain of the team and being selected to the All-Conference team in 1991. That same year he began his professional career by being drafted by the Yankees and, in 2000, he became the starting catcher for the organization, the position he holds to this day.

A four-time baseball World Champion, Posada is enjoying his major league career. In 2003, he tied Yogi Berra’s record for most home runs by a Yankee catcher and ranked third in the American League’s Most Valuable Player selection. In 2004, he was one of the Yankee’s leaders in home runs and RBIs and was at the top of the list of the best American League players. In 2005, he recorded his 1,000th career hit with a seventh inning double in Chicago.

Fred Frickie, chosen as the coach or administrator inducted into the 2006 class, retired in 1995 from Calhoun Community College, after 28 years as the college’s only baseball coach up to the date of his retirement.  His winning record of 669 victories ranked him high among conference coaches and in the top 25 of the nation’s two-year baseball coaches. Coach Frickie’s teams posted a winning percentage of .618.  Several of Coach Frickie’s players went on to play in the minor leagues and a number of them went on to play in the majors including former Calhoun baseball coach Gary Redus. Coach Frickie was an advocate of education; he can be credited with a high percentage of his players continuing their educations at upper level institutions.

An invitation-only luncheon to honor Mr. Posada and Coach Frickie will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2007, on Calhoun’s Decatur campus.  During the luncheon, the College plans to retire Posada’s number.

The ACCC Hall of Fame (HOF), established in 1989, recently relocated to the Alabama Center for Commerce in Montgomery. In addition to the induction ceremony on the 19th,  a rededication ceremony for the HOF, will be held.  Currently, there are 67 members in the Hall of Fame including Mike Anderson, head coach at the University of Missouri and former head coach of the UAB Blazers; Tim Hudson, pitcher for the Atlanta Braves; Russ Davis, former third baseman for the New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners and the San Francisco Giants; and Dr. Gary Branch, president of Faulkner State Community College.  Additional Calhoun HOF members include Jimmy Archibald (1993 - Baseball); Linda Burgess (1994 - Women's Basketball); John Douglas (1989 - Basketball); Henry Finney (1998 - Track & Field); Andrella Gray (2001 - Women's Basketball); James Hobbs (1993 - Basketball); Larry Keenum (1996 - Baseball); Mary McCoy (1998 - Coach); Clifford Outlin (1991 - Track & Field); Gary Redus (1989 - Baseball); and H.
