Partner-in-Education -- West Decatur Elementary

West Decatur SignWest Decatur Elementary, located on Memorial Drive, is an energetic, enthusiastic, and culturally diverse school. The 358 students are approximately 52% African-American, 35% Hispanic, and 13% Caucasian. The forty-two faculty and staff members, under the leadership of Principal Yvette Evans, are both encouraging and nurturing to the Pre-K through fifth graders under their care.

Mission Statement

The mission of West Decatur Elementary School is to develop creative, productive and respectful individuals who value themselves and others. This will be accomplished by providing a quality education delivered by a devoted staff which demonstrates high expectations in a safe, nurturing and orderly environment.

West Decatur Beliefs

  1. Every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
  2. Every individual is entitled to a quality education in a safe, nurturing and orderly environment.
  3. Every Individual needs to believe in self-worth and the value of others.
  4. Every individual needs to accept consequences for chosen behavior.

Partnership Efforts

  1. students at West Decatur ElementaryCalhoun faculty and staff volunteers serve as reading mentors one morning a week.
  2. Calhoun provides certificates of recognition to those who make the "A" and "A/B" Honor Roll each grading period at West Decatur.
  3. Staff volunteers assist in the "Reading is Fundamental" Book Giveaways four times during the school year.
  4. West Decatur is featured on Calhoun's Website and Calhoun is featured on West Decatur's.
  5. Last year Calhoun provided mulch for landscaping and beautifying the grounds of West Decatur.
  6. Calhoun actively participates in West Decatur's PTA program.
  7. Calhoun secured funding to purchase T-shirts for the "Earth Savers", an environmental awareness club of twenty 3rd-5th graders.
  8. Volunteers have assisted in judging the annual Spelling Bee in January.
  9. Calhoun's library staff has and is serving as a resource for West Decatur's Resource Center.
  10. A Calhoun staff member served as a community representative at last year's SACS re-accreditation for West Decatur.

Accreditation:

West Decatur Elementary is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary and Middle Schools and the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation.
